The Laboratory of Materials (LoM) is part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Thessaly. During the 18 years of its operation, it has developed significant research activities by participating in 31 European and national competitive research projects whilst also being active in providing technological services. In 2000 LoM took the initiative for establishing the Greek Metallurgical Society (EME), today part of FEMS, and organized the first National Conference of Metallic Materials, and this year is organizing the 5th Conference of this series. In the education sector, LoM supports theoretical and laboratory undergraduate courses of Physical Metallurgy, Welding Science and Technology, Materials Selection in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Failures and Structural Failures, Forming Processes and the corresponding graduate courses. In LoM over 70 dissertations and 6 doctoral theses have been performed to date.
