The Laboratory of Agronomy and Applied Crop Physiology provides research and education on the fields of land and water use, land evaluation, land desertification – environmental outputs of land use systems (soil erosion, nitrates pollution, etc), crop modeling and natural vegetation growth under different soil climatic conditions in Mediterranean environments and mapping of environmental sensitive areas by using Remote sensing and GIS techniques and applications. The Laboratory since 1996 provides also research on biomass crops for energy production.

Research Results / Products

Results on the growth, development and productivity of important extensively grown crops (cereals, oil- and fiber producing and industrial crops, and important crops for animal breeding.

Results on the growth, development and productivity of alternative biomass crops for bioenergy production (cynara, switch grass, miscanthus, sweet and fiber sorghum, kenaf, etc), as well as pharmaceutical and aromatic plants (cynara cardunculus, Artemisia annua).

Results with regard to the effect of crop rotation and intensive cultivation of legumes for seed production or as cover crops on the yield increase of the following crop and on the improvement of the soil physical and chemical properties and fertility.

Results with regard to the use of slow nitrogen release fertilizers on the physical and economic efficiency of the fertilization and the productivity of important crops in Greece.
